Most of us eat foods that cause heartburn, but not a lot of people actually know what they are. I know that I wasn’t sure until I started to look into it more carefully.
The modern diet is responsible for millions of people suffering from heartburn and acid reflux, and this is something that needs to be addressed if you want to get rid of heartburn or acid reflux problems permanently.
Over the last 50 years or so we have turned away from more fresh and natural foods, and have diets which contain food which is heavily processed and full of fats and sugar. The fact that the amount of people suffering from heartburn has risen dramatically over this time shows that diet plays a major part in the problem.
Certain foods aggravate and damage the valve that sits between the esophagus and the stomach. It is this valve which is responsible for keeping food and stomach acid, in the stomach. When it is damaged, it is no longer able to do its job properly. This is when heartburn problems start, and if left untreated can result in full blown acid reflux, which can be a lot more painful.
The good news is that you can take steps to fix the problem. It will involve eating certain foods and avoiding others. Any doctor or nutritionist will tell you that certain foods will trigger heartburn, while other foods can relieve heartburn. I have listed the most common types of foods that cause heartburn below. The quicker you can make changes to your diet, the faster you will feel the benefits.
Heartburn Foods To Avoid
Because acid is the thing that is causing the pain and the constant burning sensation, the last thing you will want to do is to add more acid into your body. This means cutting out foods that contain acid.
Mainly this means not eating citrus fruits, as they can be be very acidic in nature. So keep away from fruits like oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and tomatoes. This means not drinking uices made from these fruits either.
Be careful what you drink as well. Things like coffee and alcohol act as triggers for heartburn. So cut back drastically on these two, or even better, give them up all together. The best things that you can drink are water or certain herbal tea’s.
Avoid any foods that need to be fried or contain high levels of fat. Foods like these irritate the digestive system and are hard to break down. This means that your stomach will need to produce more acid to try and break the food down. More acid will mean more heartburn problems.
It has been said that if white sugar was invented today, it would never get on the market. White sugar has no benefits whatsoever. It stops your body from working in a natural way, and plays havoc with your internal systems. It is also a well knowen trigger for acid reflux and heartburn.
Many people think that milk can help relieve heartburn and is a good natural heartburn remedy. This is a myth and a trap that I fell into many times in the past. While it may seem to provide temporary relief from heartburn, it will end up with your stomach producing more acid.
This next one I found very hard to take. Chocolate is a major cause of heartburn. I almost cried when I found this out, but I have to tell you. So avoid it as much as possible.
Just as there are foods that will trigger heartburn, there are other foods which can prevent heartburn and ease heartburn pain very quickly.
